The Task

You are the senior foreign correspondent (reporter) for the International Herald Tribune. You have been assigned to the foreign desk in South Africa, the Ottoman Empire, Southeast Asia, or Latin America. You are encouraged to travel throughout the regions/continent. It is the 19th century. You have been on your assignment for several months and now you are ready to fulfill your task.

The Editor has assigned you and your fellow reporters to inform their readers on the subject of Imperialism, since it is the job of a newspaper reporter to inform its readers.

The information you gather must be presented in a format that is easily read by people from all over the world and in different languages. Your informations will help readers to arrive at a their own conclusions about whether or not the European powers should continue their policy of imperialism.

Public opinion is fast becoming an important factor in world politics. Politicians and the public take notice of what is being reported and written in the newspapers.

Supporters of imperialism argue that it is good for the imperialist countires and that the policy of imperialism secures and advances their power in an increasingly competitive and dangerous world. To change the imperialist policy will impact Europe's standing in with world.

Others argue that imperialism is a result of greed and economic exploitation. They make a distinction between "colonialism" and "imperialism."
